mentorship

#HomegirlAmbassadors was an intergenerational mentorship program designed to help girls of color gain insight and inspiration, build community, and feel empowered to tackle our careers and change the world.  One reason why WOC struggle to reach higher levels in the workplace is lack of quality mentorship, and a dangerous culture that promotes competitiveness over collaboration. That's why Homegirl Project connects experienced, invested mentors with passionate young mentees aged 13-18. By making space for one another and paying it forward, we plan to succeed together.

Our mentorship program was concluded and replaced by the Homegirl Fellowship in autumn 2019.

our programs

Digital Mentorship

Watch as our mentors 'take over' the Homegirl Project's social media channels for 24 hours, providing a sneak-peek into what a day in their career is like, answering questions, and and providing insight to girls. It's like job-shadowing the coolest women you know, except  you don't even have to leave the house.

#CareerChats

Mentees apply and are matched with a compatible mentor for a one-time, one-hour, life-changing phone call to discuss a specific career-related topic. During #CareerChats, mentees have reported revamping their resumes, getting the low-down on starting nonprofits, asking one-on-one questions, and more!

#AdoptAHomegirl

Mentees apply and are matched with a compatible mentor, who oversees and advise on a personal project of the mentee's choosing. Mentees schedule regular calls during the project to update their mentor, brainstorm, debrief, and discuss. Basically, you can get a life coach, cheerleader, and friend all at once!

said they felt "more aware of opportunities, resources, and networks within their chosen career path."

  • said they felt "more confident about their leadership potential and ability to change the world."

would not otherwise have access to one-on-one personal mentorship relationships in their communities.

meet our 2019 mentors

Anshumi, age 15

“Our [mentorship] call was really influential on my life, and the plans that I have for the future. Talking to someone from a different country definitely gives you a lot more exposure. [My mentor] and I decided to stay in touch and keep communicating with one another.”

“I learned so much through this experience! We talked about the best way to carry out my plan to start a girl's STEM program in my state and how I should go about reaching out to others. Overall it was great and we're now very invested in each other's lives."

Christabel, age 19

"My mentor stated that she was more of my homegirl than teacher, so it was easier to open up to her. We sent emails back and forth; I told her about issues I was having and she immediately referred me to some resources she found. She also helped me refine my resume."

Florence, age 15

"My mentor educated me on the process of creating a nonprofit organization. We went over how to register a nonprofit and the process of writing bylaws. She also explained to me ways to promote my organization to-be. It was incredibly enriching!"
